The decision to alter my PBJ X The Denim Store jeans wasn’t an easy one. But the salesperson at The Denim Store over estimated the shrinkage and recommended me a size too big. The effects of that paired with the stretch from extended wear, wasn’t something an extra hole on the belt could fix.
I called the store for a recommended place to go for alteration, but found out that the recommended location could not retain the chain-stitch on the hem and even claimed that there wasn’t a chain-stitching machine in Singapore. I wasn’t convinced. A quick search immediately shows that Obbi Good Label does chain-stitching, but unfortunately, not alterations.
Further research revealed that Tet Tailors Alteration Center to be the only tailor in Singapore that provides chain-stitching. I made a quick trip down to Peninsula Plaza. The owner, Mr Loh Tet Seng, is a nice guy. He’ll immediately strike up a conversation while taking your measurements. He took very quick measurements which did not seem very precise as he was chatting with my friend. I wanted to take in the waist, which required adjusting the entire jeans, as well as sacrificing two of the rivets near the seams. I paid $40 for the alteration and $15 for the chain-stitch.
About 10 days later, I received a text message informing me of my jeans being ready for collection. Trying on the jeans for the first time, I was immediately disappointed. He made the jeans skinny, a fit that I repulsed. As I have slightly bigger calfs, it felt as if it was going to burst. Sure, I did not specify about wanting it to be slim instead of skinny, but a good tailor should always take proper measurements all around and be very attentive to the customer’s tastes.
Chain-stitching on a Kansai Special
I immediately pointed out the problem I had with it. Tet said that he had allowance left in so could loosen the fit in just 20 minutes. He marked out the jeans and passed it to his partner (wife?). She readjusted the width and chain-stitched the hems again afterwards. Even after the adjustment, it still felt a little too tight. It feels okay and looked good when I stood up, but when I squatted or crossed my legs, it felt like the threads were going to give way.
While Tet seems experienced and has amazing customer service, the work is solid but seems a little complacent. I would still recommend people to go there, but take note be precise and detailed about exactly what and how you want done.
