Iconic was the keyword whenever I decide on the item that I write in The Need List. The G9 Harrington Jacket is no exception, having graced the torsos of icons like Steve McQueen, Frank Sinatra and the King himself, who popularized it to a stella level when he wore it in his 1958 movie King Creole. While this style of jacket earned the nickname Harrington because it was worn by the character Rodney Harrington in the 1960s prime time soap opera Peyton Place, YouTube doesn’t have any videos of him actually wearing it.
To be honest, my initial impression of the style of the jackets were kinda old school and probably the kind you see on older men around here, I’ve grown to appreciate the simplicity of the jacket bit by bit. It’s really just an uncomplicated piece of outerwear that works in every situation. Also, if you are worried about looking too mature for your age, a slim and vintage (even slimmer) version of the jackets are available. Check out this discussion on the sizing if you are constantly worried (like me) about a bad size when you order online.
Which is THE jacket for you to get?
While Grenfell and Baracuta were the first companies that produced harrington-styled jackets, Baracuta is the remaining one that still sells the original model to this day. With that said, I would personally go for the natural color of the Original G9 Harrington Jacket, as seen most commonly worn by the icons, even though Mr McQueen looks pretty awesome in the Dark Navy version of it. And if you noticed, the official Baracuta online store sells the Harringtons with colours worn by McQueen or Elvis for £25 more than the other colours. If you really want to be close to the original cult trend of wearing harrington jackets, you would pair it with your favourite Fred Perry or Ben Sherman polo t-shirts.
There are plenty of other jackets that I wanna buy, but just can’t because of the weather in Singapore. This one though, seem like it will work well in the usual air con office we work at.
