If you refuse to wake up at 4 am like me to witness the actual fish market auctions, you can still get a taste of Tsukiji with its Outer Fish Market.
I wouldn’t even normally go with my Mum to the fish market under any circumstances, but the Tsukiji Outer Fish Market has a special allure that draws me to it every single time. Staying only 10 minutes walk away at Shintomicho really helped the cause too. You would think that you could only find seafood at a fish market, but this one is different. Buy everything from tamagoyaki, taiyaki, sushi houses, knives, all types of meat, and of course, the freshest seafood. There are a lot of shops specializing in inexpensive Japanese snacks so load up on souvenirs to bring back here.
It’s easy to spend the entire day here, with so many small shops scattered towards all directions from the market. There is even a rest area because that’s precisely what you need. It’s a 15 minutes walk to Ginza if you finish early.
