I wouldn’t consider myself the superstitious sort, but I’ve always thought of lucky charms performing more of a placebo-like role. They make you feel that someone’s got your back. Apart from raising your confidence in taking risks, they give you a talking point when your friends notices your charm. Here are a few of things I’d consider lucky.
- The Holy Bible
Holy might be a better word because lucky would just be disrespectful. While I’ve admittedly backslided a great deal, the word of God still has a place in my bookshelves, bag during long travels and in my heart. Commonly referred to as the Moleskine bible, this lovely gift from Alan is a ESV Journaling Bible which lays flat when open. It’s most definitely the best looking one out there. Available at PageOne. - Black Charms

I got this charm for victory and warding off evil from Zozoji Temple in Tokyo. Japan’s temples are full of charms where locals and tourists alike buy for their loved ones, but this one is apparently popular because of its unconventional black colour. The colour comes from the black image of Amida Buddha hidden away from the public eye in the temple. I got it during my second trip in Japan and it has a permanent place in my daily work bag.
- French Guardian Angel 20 Francs
I don’t own this yet, but this is definitely one that I’m on the hunt for. This coin was minted between 1871 and 1898. The designer of this gold coin, Augustine Dupre, was sentenced to lose his head on the guillotine during the French Revolution. According to legend, however, Dupre was able to bribe his guard with the Angel coin he carried in his pocket and make his escape. Legend also says that Napoleon Bonaparte always carried an early French Angel in his pocket until losing it the night before the fateful Battle at Waterloo. This coin has long been termed as one of the luckiest coin in the world. French pilots during World War 1 rarely took flight without one in their kit. However, it costs a unfortunate US$400 to obtain in uncirculated condition. One thing for sure, it’s gonna make its owner lucky when he sells it.
