Anyone who have been to Tokyo would be surprised at the apparent lack of Wifi hotspots in such a technologically-advanced country. Don’t expect to navigate your way around Shibuya expecting to find random hotspots because it almost never works.
After my trip to the Alpha Industries in Mitsukoshi in Shinjuku led me to realise the M-65 really isn’t my style, I noticed the Wired Cafe at the corner of the department store. Unlike the one on the second floor of Shibuya’s Tatsuya, this one was packed. There was even a short queue to enter. It didn’t matter that maybe 80% of the patrons did not come for the free WIFI, but I did.
Settling down in a corner planning my next destination, I noticed the popularity and liveliness and you would probably be the only one utilizing the free internet, despite that being the entire concept of their store. While there are places around that provides free WIFI access, this remains to be the most prominent and easily-accessible one around. One would think that their main clientele would be foreigners, but I’m probably the only one here.
The particular outlet requires you to register with Freespot, which sends you advertising mails in return for using their free WIFI. Be prepared for a nightmare trying to use the passcode they send to you to surf the net, it didn’t work the first 23523523 times I’ve tried. The two times I’ve been here, I’ve only been drinking beer. The prices are middle-ranged, and while you can probably access the free WIFI from outside the store, be nice and get a drink.
